Good morning, this is Topher, from Washington Church of Christ, bringing you a Message Minute.

You can't delight the crowds all the time.

I remember fondly those glory days.  Pitching for my high school baseball team, wrestling in the 152 lb weight class, serving aces from the first seed position on the Smyrna High School tennis team.  I look back with fondness on those years.  I especially remember our sectional tennis tournament my senior year.  It fell on my birthday, and I played my heart out.  I even received a personal standing ovation from the crowd.

Boy, I loved to delight the crowd.

As I grow older, I still play tennis tournaments and run races, I've learned a thing or two about sports and the crowds. I've learned it's nice to be the winner, but no one delights the crowds all the time, and eventually, my crowd delighting moments will fade.

But I take special comfort in a Psalm that helps orient me whether I'm delighting or disappointing the crowds.  Psalm 37:23-24 says, "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way, though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand."

Above all the winning, losing, and crowds, focus on delighting the Lord, knowing that the God who created heaven and earth will pick you up when you fall.
