Ashley Madison doesn't live in Washington, Indiana.

Ashley Madison doesn't live in Washington, Indiana
by: Christopher Wiles

Many of you have just the same amount of knowledge concerning Ashley Madison as my wife and I had last week.  "Ashley who?" is the question we asked when the name of an affair driven website was brought to us.  Sadly, some of you reading this now may be already too acquainted with this horrendous website that has been all over the national news.  My wife and I would be happy to support you in prayer and counsel if you're already struggling with it.  If you don't know anything about the Ashley Madison website, why don't you sit back for a minute and let me fill you in on what I've learned about Ashley Madison and why it makes me very proud of the city of Washington, IN.

ASHLEY MADISON WEBSERVICE
I was introduced to the Ashley Madison idea after ministry friends of mine posted news articles about it on their Facebook news feed.  It turns out that Ashley Madison is a website that specializes in facilitating marriage affairs. My wife heard about it through friends of FB as well.  Business Insider describes the website this way, "One of the best-known cheating sites is Ashley Madison."  When I do a search on Ashley Madison through Google, this is the text of the advertisement that comes up first in my list.  "The Original Extramarital Affairs Site. As Seen On Dr. Phil & Ellen."  It's so widely used that one Yahoo news report shows that only three zip codes in the US don't have Ashley Madison accounts.  How do we know where AM user accounts live?

THE CHEATERS GOT CHEATED ON.  Yes, Ashley Madison was hacked and something to the tune of 32 million users' information has been made available on the web.  The hacked and leaked information is not easy for the average web user like me to view but there are a couple of sites that give you a smidgen of access to this enormous database that contains usernames, emails, and financial data.  The one that worked well for me was, https://ashley.cynic.al/, which allowed me to search email addresses to see if they were registered in the database.  I searched all the email addresses that I regularly send email to, and all came back clear. (Whew, I'm glad I don't have to have any of those one-on-one conversations at church!)  There is also this google map that displays the physical location of Ashley Madison accounts: ASHLEY MADISON GOOGLE MAP.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR WASHINGTON, IN. After searching the Google Map for the zip code 47501, I was excited to see that Washington, Indiana has no presence on the Ashley Madison Hack database.  Elnora, Otwell, Bruceville, Vincennes, Cannelburg, Shoals, Loogootee, and more have been revealed by the hack to have accounts set up on the Ashley Madison website.  Wahoo!  Congratulations Washington on being Ashley Madison hacked accounts free!
Click the image to view a larger version.

WHAT THIS DOESN'T MEAN.  It doesn't mean that our city is AM free though.  The Ashley Madison website boasts nearly 40 million user profiles.  If 32 million user profiles have been hacked, then there is still 20% of the accounts that haven't been exposed yet.  It could be that Washington still has Ashley Madison accounts.  It also doesn't mean we don't have cheaters, liars, drunkards, and all sorts of other people who accept, condone, and participate in sin that is very obviously condemned in the Bible.  We're not a perfect community, so there's still a lot of work for us to do!

WHY DOES IT MATTER TO ME?  I support families (including my own) by watching out for them and then educating them to watch out for themselves.  Back in the days of MySpace, I was serving for five years as a youth minister in Franklin, TN.  One set of parents in our church knew that they were struggling to keep up with the fast paced technology that their teenagers were getting into.  After hearing their plea for help, my wife and I agreed to help watch their kiddos on MySpace and alert the parents if anything "bad" was going on.  We also helped educate them on how emerging social media worked.  Many parents worry about their kids' online relationships (especially when sexual predator videos such as this one are released) but are at a loss following the various emerging technology that gives people access to relationships with their children.  My wife and I have spent years being an extra set of "eyes" on the internet for parents and friends as well as a resource for technology education.

Does it worry you that a preacher and
his wife might see your "booty call"
profile on Tinder?
(The "booty call" app is what one of
our elder's wives calls Tinder!)
No, we don't operate as morality police.  We like to think of ourselves as part of a "Neighborhood Net Watch" (yes, I came up with that based on the old Neighborhood Watch system), a group that watches out for the local community on the internet and reports potentially dangerous situations.  In fact, I've talked with our local police detective about GPS app vulnerability in our area.  I've also had lunch with our police chief about creating a formalized "Neighborhood Net Watch" to help in watching our local network as the GPS based social media apps continue to invade the safety and privacy of our homes.  Yes, I do have Yik Yak, Tinder, and Erodr accounts with accompanying full accountability and knowledge of them by my wife and the Washington Police Chief.  I also make sure people know who I am and what I'm about on those apps.  We do all this in hopes of supporting our community families.  (p.s. Do you know of a GPS based social media app I don't know about yet?  Send it to me in the comments below so that I can make parents more aware of what safety issues are lurking on their family phones.)  (p.p.s. Are you interested in helping monitor our community on GPS based apps through a formalized "Neighborhood Net Watch"?  If you've got a smart phone, a desire to help our community, a clean background check, and good accountability from your spouse, send me a message!)

WHAT DO YOU DO NOW?
If you:
  • Are Concerned About Your Marriage - If you previously have had a reason to be concerned about your own marriage, or you are an accountable community leader with decent conflict resolution skills, go do an email search of the Ashley Madison Hack by clicking here: https://ashley.cynic.al/
  • Are Concerned About Your Community - If you want to see how your community is represented on the Ashley Madison Google Map, then go here: ASHLEY MADISON GOOGLE MAP
  • Found Someone with a profile on Ashley Madison - Then take a few minutes to calm down before you TALK TO THEM.  Yes, I said TALK TO THEM.  "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over." - Matthew 18:15
    • Don't text them or FB message them.
    • Don't post it on social media.
    • Don't talk to anyone else, except for perhaps a close confidant who will pray with you and give you advice before YOU handle this with the person you found.  "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel." - Proverbs 12:15
    • PRAY.  Consider even praying and fasting while seeking scriptural guidance, because you need the wisdom of God in this one.  "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." - James 1:5
    • Talk to that person face-to-face if at all possible.  If it isn't possible to see them face-to-face, then handle it directly with them via phone (voicemail doesn't count as a good way to handle conflict).
    • When you do speak with that person, ASK QUESTIONS (Jesus did it a lot to handle conflict), rather than make statements.  Don't try to build traps with your questions, just come right out and say, "John Doe, I really care about you and our relationship as friends/wife/husband, which is why I want to ask you a question.  Will you tell me about your profile on the Ashley Madison website?"  Then wait for their response and ask more questions.
    • Remember to be gently correct them because you don't want to ruin a relationship by sinful anger yourself.  "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted." - Galatians 6:1
  •  Want educate others with this little bit of wisdom, tell them:
    • There is no real privacy on the internet.  EVERYTHING YOU DO ON THE INTERNET IS SAVED SOMEWHERE!  This makes sense when you stop to think about what the internet really is.  It is a collection of computers all connected together.  Every time you view a webpage, you are downloading information from another computer to your own, where it is stored for your web browser to translate it into visual images and text you can understand.
      • Do you really think SnapChat doesn't have record of anything you've sent?  Check out this statement in their terms of service. "The Snapchat Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms. By accepting these Terms, you agree to the collection, use, and sharing of your information through the Services in accordance with the Privacy Policy." - Snapchat.com/terms
      • Do you really think those "discreet" relationships on Ashley Madison are private?  Why then do they have this disclaimer in the fine print? “We cannot ensure the security or privacy of information you provide through the Internet.” - Fox59.com
      • There is no real privacy on the internet!
  • Want to make the world a better place by being a visible deterrent and reporting presence online, then contact me.  Let's talk about this "Neighborhood Net Watch" idea or maybe an idea you have for something even better.
  • Want to pray for your community, then have faith and hope in these words. "13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." - James 5:13-16

Living Lesson: The Plight of Performance

Living Lessons: The Plight of Performance
By: Christopher Wiles
Our Wednesday Night Meals have been a lot of fun over the summer.  We've enjoyed good food, good fellowship, and good encouragement from various church members focused on the fruit of the Spirit.  Different people have tried their hands planning the meals with a lot of success.  Last night was the men's night, which featured Bill Dawson and Scott Schnarr's impressive grilling skills, but those skills led to a problem.
The men were given the highest compliment possible when the women said, "You guys should be in charge of the menu every week!"  What followed soon after were man rumblings such as, "Uh oh!  Maybe we should NOT have done such a good job!"
I'll be the first to admit, over the years my wife has grown to be 100 times better at planning meals and cooking than I am.  I found that out two years ago when I committed to planning the meals every single Friday for our family.  The result was that I produced some awesome meals . . . about once every three months.  Many of the others turned into, "What new and unhealthy topping can I add to make these pancakes seem different from last week?"  My cooking skills fit better with the old country song lyrics, "I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever once."  Yup, I'm good for a meal every now and then, but on a regular basis, my wife is hands down better than me.
Which leads to the dilemma at hand, which is a problem many Christians struggle with in many facets of life.  Do we UNDER perform so that we aren't asked to take more responsibility than we can handle.  Seriously, I know people who take this approach.  Don't want to do something to help your husband at his job?  Just intentionally mess it up by "accidentally" wiping his email server and you won't get asked to help again.  Don't want to have to clean the house?  Do such a poor job washing windows that your wife takes the broom (why were you washing windows with a broom?) from your hand and escorts you out of the house in disgust.  Don't want to speak at church?  Just throw in some passing comments about your intention to handle snakes and it's guaranteed you won't be asked to clip on that lapel mic again.
To answer our question, let's consult what the Spirit inspired Paul  to say about the effort we put into our daily activities.   "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." (Colossians 3:23)   Ouch, maybe our intentional ineptitude doesn't quite fit with Paul's ideas.  Could it be that cooking food, cleaning house, and managing emails could be work done for the Lord instead of human masters?  You better believe it.  Wise old Solomon said much the same in Ecclesiastes 9:10, "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom."
The answer is a resounding NO.  Christians, we do not intentionally "tank" anything.  For every effort, work as to the Lord, knowing that you may not have that chance again this side of the grave.  Do your best in everything you can.  Oh, and when the church ladies say, "Maybe you should plan the meals every  week", you can quote the best excuses of the Bible by saying, "I now have a wife, so I can't come," (Luke 14:20) (and potentially get slapped) or simply and graciously be man enough to say, "Thanks for the compliment, but I just can't."

Upcoming Wednesday Meal:  Our last meal will be a Fish Fry with hush puppies at 6:30pm, with family devotionals/kids classes to follow.  Feel free to bring a side item, drink, or dessert.  We hope you can make it!

Honduras Debriefing: The Baxter Institute

Honduras Debriefing: The Baxter Institute
By: Christopher Wiles
Filtered Water, gated dormitories, mango trees, and a ping-pong table; what’s not to like for the American missionary?  This year we spent 4 nights in Guajire and 5 nights in a new and different location in an effort to stay closer to the many places that we are involved in ministry.  Baxter Institute is situated in the middle of Tegucigalpa, 1 mile from the airport, 2 miles from the school for the blind, and only a 45 minute drive from the remote mountain region of Guajire.
What impressed us more than the amenities and security of our new mission home, was the amount of ministries they participate in to honor God.  As well as providing full service hosting for foreign mission teams like us, the Baxter Institute offers the following:  an onsite clinic that sees over 10,000 patients a year; a four year degree program training missionaries, preachers, teachers, and leaders for the church of Christ in the Spanish speaking world; daily chapel offering God’s Word to anyone on the 13 acre campus; and housing for students and married couples.

We felt very safe and secure at the Baxter Institute yet at the same time we experienced the freedom to extend our arms into other areas of ministry and service in Honduras.  The President of Baxter Institute, Dr. Steve Teel, was very personable, helpful, capable, and had a genuine care for the people of Honduras, the mission teams, and the students at Baxter Institute. Yet one of the best thoughts I have concerning Baxter, was that a person could feel connected there.  As you meet other mission teams, nurses, security guards, office administration, teachers, kids, or students at Baxter, you begin to understand that you are a part of something bigger. You're a part of God's redemptive work in this world.  You're a part of His mission.

You can find out more about Baxter Institute, how to help, watch baptisms, enjoy singing, and find out how to be involved with the mission of Christ to change the world by following these links:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:19-20

Hospitality Hugs and Handshakes

Living Lessons: Hospitality, Hugs, and Handshakes
By:  Christopher Wiles

While in Honduras three weeks ago I was blessed by God to receive amazing hospitality from a people that have little material wealth.  They welcomed us in their homes, offered us meals, requested the service of washing our clothes, and much more all with an expectation of no payments.  It is their faith and culture that encourages them to use their home, possessions, and energies to serve others.
I was convicted when I returned to the States, that my home is not as hospitable as theirs.  Yes, by American standards, Ashley and I might be viewed highly as we have someone in our home for a meal about every two weeks.  But that is usually friends, and rarely does a stranger receive the same level of hospitality rivaling that of the Hondurans when they enter my neighborhood.

Yet the Scriptures many in our community profess to follow say a lot about hospitality, even toward foreigners.

Hebrews 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

1 Peter 4:9  Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

Romans 12:13  Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Leviticus 19:34  You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

To Jalil, Mujtaba, Juma, Farooq, Omid, Vakil, Ghulam, and Mohamad, I Thank You!
I am convinced this is an area of my active daily faith that I can grow with help from God.  When I found out today that there was a group of Afghanistan students hanging out at the Daviess County Produce Auction in Cannelburg, IN, I knew God was giving us the opportunity to make someone feel welcome.  What happened though, was them treating me as though I was the one to be respected and served.  Their graciousness, respect, kindness, and sincerity was far and away deeper and greater than mine.  The conversation with them was so much fun and the mutual learning so beneficial that we traded contact information.  It didn't matter to them one bit that we might be followers of different world religions.  What mattered most was showing kindness, respect, and hospitality for another human.  They also shared that they most often hug when meeting new people instead of a handshake!  I felt the value they gave me and my family.  I only hope they felt the same value from me as well.

(We did try to work out a way to have them in our home for a meal, but their limited time in Southern Indiana just couldn't afford it this time.  We have contacted their program coordinator to offer hospitality to students in the future.  Let me know if you're interested in joining us.)

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:27

Honduras Debriefing: Breaking Chains

Honduras Debriefing: Breaking Chains
By: Christopher Wiles

Rewarding and Surprising.  That was our response to the Breaking Chains Ministry that God exposed us to on the last night of our mission trip.  First, we met at the Breaking Chains children’s home, then we traveled to the downtown streets of Tegucigalpa to feed a meal to homeless and disenfranchised.

Ministry: Breaking Chains

Years Operating: 6
Location: Tegucigalpa Honduras
Our Primary Contact: Amber Foster
Primary Mission: The ministry's mission is to serve and seek change for those affected by urban poverty in Tegucigalpa by meeting basic needs and developing human relationships that act as a gateway toward a relationship with Christ.
http://www.bchonduras.org/

While the photo in this article isn’t one of the highest quality, it does give you an idea of the nature of our activity.  God blessed our members with the opportunity to hand food from the back of a truck to anyone who would come.  The photo depicts Jason, Jalayna, Carla, Sadie, and Jaden serving in a very active way.  Afterwards, we walked within a close proximity to deliver food to any that didn’t realize the truck was there.

For a Tuesday evening in Honduras, the streets were way too busy. The crowd possessed many who were huffing glue in bottles trying to escape the pains of the day.  Yet all were welcoming and treated us kindly.  Teenagers put their glue bottles down to give us a hug.   Snaggle-toothed old men stood tall and smiled as they hugged us and asked for photos. One of our mission team members mentioned, “This was a very rewarding effort, because it is the first activity that really took me out of my comfort zone to love with another human being.”

This great ministry, which now runs a children’s home and builds houses too, started from the humble beginnings in 2009 of serving food from the back of a truck. We’re grateful they have never lost their humble desire to serve.  We look forward to serving with them again in the future.

“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’” – Matthew 25:40

A Storm is Coming - Message Minute

Good morning, this is Topher from Washington Church of Christ, bringing your message minute.

How do storms make you feel? In your mind picture the bright flash of lightning, hear the rumbling crashing thunder, feel the air, the ground, your body shake, smell the hard rain coming. Does the thought of a coming storm scare you?

Last night, a good friend texted me these words, "A storm is coming…" in reference to a tough situation I’ll have to handle soon. The truth is, Jesus never promised us a life without storms. He even told his closest friends, those twelve disciples, this statement, "In this world you WILL have trouble."

But here's what the Master Teacher said, in the context around His troubling statement.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33

"Have peace, Take heart, Jesus has overcome the world."

Today, there may be a storm coming that fills you with fear and trepidation, but make an effort to have faith in Jesus, follow His teachings, and have peace, knowing that He has overcome the world. You'll be glad you did.

Message Minutes are sponsored by  Washington Church of Christ and recorded for public 107.9 The Memories WAMW morning radio program.  They air at approximately 7:35am on Weekday Mornings.

Honduras Debriefing: Julio's Smile

Honduras Debriefing
By: Christopher Wiles

There were many important theological and life lessons we shared with others on the July mission trip to Honduras.  Sometimes I think the “catrachos” shared even more of those lessons with us.

Name: Julio
Age: 14
Years in Guajire: at least 3
Superhuman Power: He always smiles

I’ve got pictures of Julio from at least 3 years ago in my archives.  Guess what I learned from looking back at my photographs.  Julio ALWAYS smiles.  This kid has smiled every time we see him.  He always seems genuinely happy.  Let me tell you a little bit about Julio now.  He has no dad in the picture.  He lives in an extremely impoverished mountain farming area.  His mother can’t take care of him.  He lives with his aunt Maria (whose husband died) that has nine other children.  He shares a bed with other boys to stay warm.  He is an outstanding and intuitive assistant on a house build, knowing just where he needs to be at every moment.  He never asks us for anything but is grateful for any gift.  He has a really cool “frohawk”.  Oh, and JULIO ALWAYS SMILES.

I loved being around Julio even more this year.  God delivered a message to me through Julio that reads much like Philippians 2:14-15 “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”
Let’s take a lesson from Julio’s playbook (which is derived from God) to take a step back from the silly things that instigate our mumbling and grumbling, and really consider how blessed we are.  Let’s turn those frowns upside down.  Brothers and sisters, no matter life’s circumstance, as a believer in Christ, IT IS TIME TO SMILE!

A Grief Observed - Clive Staples Lewis

"A Grief Observed" - Clive Staples Lewis
Comments by: Christopher Wiles

I don't like everything he writes, but I do find all his writings challenging. When Bill Wininger let me borrow A Grief Observed written by C.S. Lewis, I was definitely challenged. Lewis lets loose on paper the raw emotion coming from his heart in the days following the loss of his wife.

Some of the immediate writing is hard, angry, depressed, and questioning of God and His sovereignty. Yet Lewis doesn't reside there forever. Even through this short compilation of writings you see movement toward healing. Here is an excerpt from the heart of Lewis weeks after the tragedy.

"Something quite unexpected has happened. It came this morning early. For various reasons, not in themselves at all mysterious, my heart was lighter than it had been for many weeks. For one thing, I suppose I am recovering physically from a good deal of mere exhaustion. And I'd had a very tiring but very healthy twelve hours the day before, and a sounder night's sleep; and after ten days of low-hung grey skies and motionless warm dampness, the sun was shining and there was a light breeze. And suddenly at the very moment when, so far, I mourned (my wife) least, I remembered her best. Indeed it was something (almost) better than memory; an instantaneous, unanswerable impression. To say it was like a meeting would be going too far. Yet there was that in it which tempts one to use those words. It was as if the lifting of the sorrow removed a barrier."

Followers of Christ often walk a tightrope of balance in handling conversation surrounding the physical deaths of family members, friends, and loved ones. Following Solomon's wisdom in Ecclesiastes 3:4, I believe it is good to let people experience weeping and mourning. Yet, due to the experience of others like Lewis and sound Biblical guidance from passages like 1 Thess 4:13, I choose to gently believe and look for hope of the clouds lifting one day.

Like many of you, my heart is still saddened and heavy at the loss of life here with friend and brother in Christ, Bill Mundy. I've experienced that loss through my own tears and my own struggling questions. Yet, I've reached the place where I can look forward to the hope of one bright shining day of seeing his smile again. I hope you reach that place at some point too.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance." - Excerpts from Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

"Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope." - 1 Thessalonians 4:13

Mighty Missions

Today our group got to experience two wonderful missions that started with very humble beginnings. Mi Esperanza is a women's mission that now makes clothes using women from Honduras, giving them better than average wages. It teaches them classes that give them valuable life and business skills and blesses them with God's Word, inspiration, and hope throughout their day.
Breaking Chains is another ministry that again began with humble beginnings by simply feeding homeless.  Tonight we did what has been done for many years, we fed the homeless out of the back of the truck. But it wasn't physical food that was our primary focus. We want to give the people value. We want them to know that they are valuable to us and to God. We want to treat them with the same value God has for them as His special creation. We want to treat them as people who are made in the image of the Almighty God. That's what we gave out from the back of the truck to the homeless tonight.
We're back at Baxter Institute, Gabriel is the first one to sleep as usual. Everything is going well on our trip. Even though we leave a part of our hearts in Honduras, we're looking forward to being home with you soon. Thank you for all your prayers.

Day 5 Dump, AFE, School for Blind

This day is always a challenging day. First we went to the dump to feed the residents there. We protect our food with Mark Connell from torch missions. He is a great guide and a big help. The residence of the temper always grateful to see us and it's always a humbling experience for us. We didn't visited the amor de Esperanza school. Many of you help Gabriel raise money for these students last year. The money helps to students go to school and pay their tuition all year long. The school serves primarily the residence of the dump. The ministry looks like it's going well and we look forward to seeing where it goes and years to come. We didn't visited the school for the blind. There are new requirements mean we can't take photos while we're in there. I wish we had some this year, but we did take a recording after asking the director of the kids singing songs to us. It's a humbling experience.

Day 6 is about to begin. We just found out the good news that the valve at the top of the shower turned on the hot water. Jonah just said "there's hot water!?"

Today also begins our final stay in the village of Guajira. Will be building a house today and then prepping for our big day, Sunday. Tomorrow we preach we teach lessons at VBS and we give away food and donations to the church. It's going to be one busy day! Will be out of communications for the next couple of days. We look forward to catching back up with you on Monday morning. Everyone is still very healthy, and we look forward to staying that way. Please pray for that endeavor! As always you can go check my facebook for more public photos.
